What changed

AAIF is the foundation Anthropic says it co-founded with Block and OpenAI last year, and the foundation to which it donated the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This donation covers the Agent Skills name and logo, the GitHub organization, and the agentskills.io domain. Anthropic says you can keep using the standard or contributing without joining the AAIF, and that it will keep Agent Skills open, community-driven, and vendor-neutral, with AAIF as a neutral home so the community has a say in what comes next.

Skills, Anthropic says, came out of work on Claude Code, which handled general knowledge work well and often lacked procedural knowledge for real business tasks. Within weeks of the October 2025 launch, developers published thousands of skills on GitHub and wrote loaders for Codex, Cursor, and OpenCode. The article and the ClaudeDevs post both say that since December 2025, more than 70 agent platforms have integrated the standard, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code. Anthropic's own tally is 1 million skills published and nearly 280 million installed.

Who it is for

Writers, installers, and teams shipping an agent that loads skills are the audience. Anthropic says use and contribution do not require AAIF membership. ClaudeDevs said existing skills keep working and the licenses do not change. The article does not name a license.

The article says engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and other companies will maintain the standard as individuals, with David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag as Lead Maintainers. ClaudeDevs said a Technical Steering Committee of engineers from Anthropic, Earendil (Pi), Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and OpenCode will govern it. The article does not use that committee name and does not name Earendil, Microsoft, or OpenCode.

How to take part

Anthropic has proposed a roadmap covering versioned releases, a formal proposal process, and security guidance for people who write and install skills. The article gives no version number and no guide text. ClaudeDevs called those three items the committee's first priority. Anthropic says the project will keep prioritizing community input and transparent decisions, as with MCP.

Read the specification at agentskills.io and join the GitHub discussion. Anthropic also points to the project Discord for feedback on proposed specification changes.

What stays unsettled

No price, plan requirement, or usage quota appears in either account, so the announcement does not show a fee change or a free tier. The specification, license text, governance charter, and security guide are not part of the announcement. Anthropic's line that the community has a say does not describe votes or who can merge a change.

Sources and editorial approach

This brief relies on the ClaudeDevs post of 22 October 2026, 17:55 UTC, and Anthropic's news article Donating Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation, checked the same day. Platform totals and the figures of 1 million skills published and nearly 280 million installed are given as Anthropic states them. The specification at agentskills.io, the GitHub discussion, the project Discord, license text, and any governance charter were not covered. Claude Code changelog entries through the 22 October 2026 release do not mention this donation. Older entries on that changelog page were not covered.
