What changed
Claude's 22 October 2026 post is the announcement. Sessions on the web, desktop, and mobile apps will run in auto mode by default the week after that post, on Pro, Max, and Team. An automated check blocks risky actions instead of asking you to approve each step. You can switch back to manual anytime.
Claude Code releases from 2.1.309 on 22 October 2026 back to 2.1.295 on 8 October 2026 do not announce this app default. They describe a separate auto-mode setting for claude -p and Agent SDK sessions. claude -p is the print form of a Claude Code session, and the Agent SDK is the other session type in the 16 October note. Both are Claude Code, separate from the web, desktop, and mobile apps.
A permission mode is the setting that note uses for how those sessions handle actions. On 16 October 2026, release 2.1.302 says claude -p and Agent SDK sessions with no permission mode start in default mode on third-party providers, with telemetry off or on a fresh install, and --permission-mode auto keeps auto. The same release says the server-side classifier now compacts a conversation too long for the safety check, instead of denying every checked tool call.
On 19 October 2026, release 2.1.304 adds /auto-mode-setup, a guided setup that reads the project and recent sessions to teach auto mode about the environment, now also available on Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry, the Claude apps gateway, and telemetry-disabled sessions. The Claude apps gateway mention means /auto-mode-setup can run there. Sessions on the web, desktop, and mobile apps running in auto mode by default are still only Claude's 22 October 2026 post.

Who it is for
Claude limits this default to Pro, Max, and Team, and to sessions on the web, desktop, and mobile apps. Other plans are outside the post. Claude Code is a different surface. Its 16 October 2026 note is the permission-mode rule for claude -p and Agent SDK sessions, and its 19 October 2026 note is the /auto-mode-setup command.
How to try it
The post gives no early-access steps and no screen, menu, or command for the manual switch. /auto-mode-setup is the Claude Code command from release 2.1.304. It reads the project and recent sessions to teach auto mode about the environment, including on Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry, the Claude apps gateway, and telemetry-disabled sessions. That command does not turn on the ordinary app default.
What is still unclear
Next week stays tied to the 22 October 2026 post, and that post names no calendar date. Claude Code releases from 2.1.309 on 22 October 2026 back to 2.1.295 on 8 October 2026 do not date the app default either. The post is silent on price, quota, extra usage, and which actions count as risky in the apps. It promises a manual switch and gives no screen, menu, or command. Plans other than Pro, Max, and Team are outside the announcement.

Sources and editorial approach
This article relies on Claude's post of 22 October 2026 at https://x.com/claudeai/status/2113360845409583307 and the Claude Code changelog at https://code.claude.com/docs/en/changelog.md, both read on 23 October 2026. The notes used from that changelog run from release 2.1.309 (22 October 2026) through release 2.1.295 (8 October 2026). The 2.1.295 note is only partly included, so the rest of that release and every older release are not part of this article. The app default is Claude's post. The permission-mode change and the server-side classifier line are the 16 October 2026 entry for 2.1.302. The /auto-mode-setup command is the 19 October 2026 entry for 2.1.304. This is not a hands-on trial of the app default.
